Vikings general manager Rick Spielman laughed at the first question he faced at his pre s conference at the Combine in Indianapolis this week."Wow, I bet a dollar there would be an Adrian Peterson question coming right out of the gate, and I did not get that. I lost,"he said, chuckling.Spielman literally could havedropped the mic right there, because nothing sums up the mountain of i sues the Vikings face this offseason better than that i sues that dwarf Petersons all-but-certaindeparture.For instance, that first question was about Sam Bradford and, by extension, their quarterback situation.MOCK DRAFT: Vikings pad O-lineIt's easy to remember, yet still hard to believe, that a year ago the Vikings were coming off an 11-win season, a division titleand the knowledge that they really should have reached the second round of the playoffs. (But they didnt, thanks to Blair Walsh, now their ex-kicker.)Nowthey're trying to figure out how to flip last season's me s not even relative me s, a genuine me s into something closer to what they had last spring. They hit this offseason as an 8-8 team that had started out 5-0, which makes that final record feel far worse. They may or may not have Peterson, based on what they can afford and what hes willing to accept. That will determine whether they need a new running back, how they can get oneand whether theyll work with what they already have. They were the worst rushing offense in the NFL last season, most of which Peterson mi sed, of course. They need Bradford, whether he was great last season or not (and the answer is hardly unanimous, although Spielman did say of him, "I think he established himself with our players, on how he played, that he can lead this organization"). They do get Pat Shurmur as his coordinator for the entire offseason and regular season, unlike the change they made in midseason last year. They still don't know when, or if, Teddy Bridgewater will be healthy enough to return: There is no timeline,"Spielman said. They need everything about their offensive line to get better, or at the very least, healthier; they went through 12 starters, including five left tackles, in 2016. They need Stefon Diggs to keep making the progre s he hasmade for two seasons, just with better luck with injuries. They need Laquon Treadwell, last years first-round pick, to live up to his draft spot in ways he never came close to in a practically invisible rookie season. Both Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer, speaking Thursday, pointed to Treadwell specifically and young wideouts in general as targets of increased organization efforts to develop players better than they had been."I feel good about Laquon,"Zimmer said. They need to figure out which veteran defensive backs they can keep; Terence Newman and Captain Munnerlyn are free agents, and they have recent draft picks they want (and need) to mature fast.Overall, they want to maintain the defenses high standards while getting much better on offense, which is no easy trick: I just want to be extremely careful that we dont rob Peter to pay Paul,"Zimmer said.WATCH: Vikings' top plays of 2016And all of this as they approach a draft that, to their credit, is deep at their positions of need running back and offensive line but in which they dont have Josh Allen Jersey a first-round pick. They traded it, remember, to get Bradford after Bridgewaters grotesque training-camp knee injury. They do have eight picks in the other six rounds as of now, which helps. It wouldn't be a shock to see the Vikings make a move to get back into the first round. For now, though, it's not hard to see why Spielman could laugh at the first question being about something other than Peterson. If that were all he had to worry about, hed be laughing with joy.
